The question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is one of the oldest in the book for students of all ages. The 400 students at the all-girls' Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem got to dream big and learn first hand about all the wonderful opportunities available for them in the workplace today. On Friday, March 24 th over 70 cool women with hot jobs volunteered to inspire, educate and motivate our girls at the East Harlem and students from their sister schools in the Bronx and Queens. The event was organized by The Young Women's Leadership Foundation and sponsored by AXA Equitable.
"If you can see it, you can be it" is a motto that is prevalent in the halls of TYWLS located on 106 th street in East Harlem. "It is important for our students to meet and speak with women who are working in jobs they have only dreamed of. 100% of our graduates are accepted to college but most girls will be the first in their families to go to college. Seeing successful women in all career fields gives them something to aspire to and creates long lasting role models and mentors for our girls", said Kathleen Ponze, Principal of TYWLS.
We recruited women volunteers, who have each made a unique difference in the world and who wanted to give back to the next generation of career women. These notable women represent professions like doctors, nurses, research scientists, financiers, stock brokers, attorneys, advertising executives, ministers, entrepreneurs, journalists and more. Participating women represented the following companies:
